Anthony Timoteus
Aim high, work hard, never give up

There seems to have started a habit in the Cape area for producing top class middle and long distance athletes over the recent years. Athletes like Elroy Gelant, William Jikqwahim Kaptein and Jeromy Jemax Andreas. Together with other young athletes like Duran Faro, Llwellyn Groenewald and Jacques Pretoriuss. Most recently one of their freshest athletes out of the oven is Anthony Timoteus.

Timoteus or ‘Timmy’ started training under Glen Reagan Bentley 5 years ago. Bentley being the founder of the Cape Ethiopians. At that time Timmy finished last in the Northern Zone Track 1500m in a 4:47 and he had a 3000m pb of just above 10min.He was round about 15 at the time. Already progression showed in the same season as he made the WP cross country team. This has proven to be his better discipline as he has brought back numerous team medals from the SA Champs over the years, yet to bring back an individual medal.

Anthony sees each national competition as experience that will assist him to do even better in the future. After each cross country season Anthony seems to get stronger and stronger on the track, and this year he has clocked pb’s of 3:55, 8:25 and 14:42 for the 1500, 3000 and 5000m as an under 19 and, as coach Bentley puts it “The Cherry on the cake”, this year he brought back a bronze medal in the 5000m at the SA Junior Champs in Stellenbosch.

In 2013 he ran a 10km pb of 32min. In 2014 he competed at the UWC event where he ran a 30:50 finishing overall 3rd. A few weeks after at the GUGS 10km in cold and wet conditions he ran a 30:58 finishing 3rd again. For the remainder of the season their plans are for Anthony to win the WP Champs cross country as well as the SA Champs, which won’t come easy as Eagles Academy athlete from Western Cape Sport School Bruce-Lynn Damons, who has proven to be Anthony’s greatest rival this season, will also be in the mix. But another team medal at SA’s seems to be on its way. There they will have to face the likes of Tumisang Monnatlala Boerseun and his CGA army. But speaking to the boys from Cape Town they seem to be fearless.

Coach Bentley and Timoteus are quite a formidable team and they are looking to prolong his career as far as possible. Their long term planning includes 2017 5000m at the World Student Games, 2018 5000m at the Commonwealth Games, 2019 5000m at the World Champs and then 10000m at the 2020 and 2024 Olympics, then he should be ready for the marathon.

Jeromy Andreas is Anthony’s role model and he had this to say “Anthony is not the most talented kid I know but damn he is a hard worker, most probably the hardest worker I know when it comes to training and racing. He’s always the smallest and shortest in the field but as the saying goes ‘dynamite comes in small packages’, he reminds me of the great Keninisa Bekele, they share the same physical atributes. With his mindset and dicipline he’ll achive the highest achievements in not only running in his life, his always down to earth and walks around with a big smile, he is not only a friend but a younger brother to me.”

Lots more can be said but the picture is clear, Timmy and his coach have very clear plans set out for his future and the coach/athlete bond is strong. “He and his coach Mr Bentley are the perfect coach and athlete match. God has done a lot in his life and South Africa will soon know about this kid!” – Jeromy Andreas.
