With PB’s of 4:22:46 in the 1500m, and 2:09 in the 800m, Lizerie Ferreira is certainly a name to remember. This 18-year old scholar from Riebeeckrand High School has had an outstanding athletic career thus far. Lizerie’s love for running started to bloom in her grade 5- year, when coach Hein Maree saw her potential. “All the running in the world could not satisfy my hunger for the sport. I have felt the energy and adrenalin of running, and desperately wanted more.”
Her most recent success is obtaining SA- colors in 2014 for the 5th consecutive time. In her youth year she came 3rd in the 800m with a 2:10.9 and 2nd in the 1500m with 4:35.7. In 2013 she became SA 1500m champ with 4:30.87 and in 2014 again with 4:28 after she won schools SA’s with a 4:25. .
Even great athletes like Lizerie, have low points in their career. Ferreira mentions that hers has been this year when she missed out on qualifying for the World Junior Championships. Luckily, she had the World Youth Champs experience in 2013 on a Ukrainian track. She was rewarded with a 7th place and a PB in the final.
Ferreira has been in epic battles over the years with World Youth Champs teammate Carina Viljoen, SA trials champ Marne Mentz, Laura Labuschaigne,Monique Stander and Michelle Redelinghuys. She is making headway as she has also been in quite a few senior races and champs. Ferreira is an aspiring Physiotherapy student at Tuks (UP) where she’ll have the option to train under World Indoor 800m Gold medalist Johan Botha with 800m star Anuscha Nice. But to all the guys, sorry she is taken.
