Laura Labuschaigne

1500 PB: 4:31:02
800 PB: 2:15

Laura came 3rd at Junior SA’s this year to Marne Mentz taking silver and Lizerie Ferreira gold. Besides from them Blandina Makatisi is also one of her biggest rivals.

Paarl Gymnasium will be losing a gem of an athlete this year, as this 18- year old is off to the University of South Alabama starting 2015. This prospective student and athlete is ecstatic about lacing up her spikes on American tracks. She will major in Psychology.

It all began at the age of 13. Laura fell in love with cross-country. Soon after, the track called her name. She started tearing up 1500m and 800m times when she hit high school and has been unstoppable ever since. She prefers 1500 to 800m though.

Laura’s success is a mixture of good genes and hard work. Although she stresses that hard work and dedication overrule talent. What motivates her? Well, Laura draws her inspiration from her coach, Tanya Malherbe. “The thought of my rivals training when I do not feel like it, gets me off the couch very quickly,” she notes. Her parents support her and cannot wait to see how it all turns out in Alabama. Her sister was once the 800m SA and LSEN champion herself.

Friends make all the travelling and competing on unknown tracks worth her while. She has made good friends over the years. Names like Niel Giliomee, Juan de Swart, Helene Swanepoel Leon Laubser and Rese Smit are all very dear to her.

Labuschaigne is determined to make running a life- long journey, and peak while she is in the USA.

Laura Labuschaigne… welcome in the world of serious athletics. Enjoy the ride.
