Akani Simbine

PERSONAL BESTS

100m – 9.97 (+0.0) – 20th on World Rankings
200m – 20.27 (-1.0)

At the World Champs Simbine will be lining up in the 100m as well as 200m and possibly the 4 x 100m. His main focus will be the 100m as this is his strongest event. This year has been the best year of his career. Akani started off the season constantly running sub 10.10 times both on altitude and sea level.

Before going abroad Simbine first won the SA Senior 100m title in 10.25 against a -2.1 headwind. Not long after he claimed the USSA title in 10.09. Simbine then went abroad where he still consistently ran near the 10.10 mark. But Simbine came with a bang in Velenje when he clocked a 9.99, becoming the first South African to run sub 10 abroad.

Not very long after that mark was surpassed by Henricho Bruintjies in a new SA record time of 9.97. The SA Junior record holder Simbine then came to equal that SA record when he also ran a 9.97 to break the World Students record at the World Student games.

With Simbine’s consistency throughout the season we believe he can make the final in the 100m at the World Champs. Facing very tough competition in Justin Gatlin, Usain Bolt, Asafa Powell, Trayvon Bromell and Tayson Gay he won’t have it easy. But Simbine says that self believe is a very powerful weapon. And with that mindset he might just snatch another sub 10sec time!
