Johan Cronje - PC Trevlyn Palframan

PERSONAL BESTS

1500m – 3:31.93
Mile – 3:50.70
SB Mile – 3:53.02 – 9th on the 2015 World Rankings

Cronje’s season has been very interesting. He started off the season by running a personal best time in the 3000m all the way back in January of 7:52.33 in Germany. And before going to Europe he won the SA 1500m title in 3:37.93 ahead of Dumisani Hlaselo. Cronje has not run the 1500m qualifying time yet but at the Eugene Diamond League he went on to run the mile time which is needed to qualify for the 1500m. And not long after he ran a time of 3:36.34 seasons best in Hengelo. But this has happened to him before that he just suddenly starts to feel heavy and struggles, he then goes back home to train and he comes back even stronger.

We all know what happened at the last World Champs when Cronje came through in the inside lane to snatch the bronze medal in the 1500m. When interviewed for the documentary ‘Time to Triumph’, Cronje said that the reason our middle distances struggle is because it is all about their mindset. And very soon after that he went to break the SA 1500m and mile records. So if there is one athlete with enough experience and the correct mindset to cause an upset in the 1500m race it is surely Cronje.

The last most notable race he ran was on the 15th of July when he clocked a 1:48.59 in the 800m in Belgium. Cronje is also now busy preparing with Rynardt van Rensburg for World Champs sharpening up his speed. But now the question still begs, what can Cronje do at the World Champs?

Cronje will face an in form Asbel Kiprop who clocked a 3:26 earlier this year, Kiprop who struggled with injury during the last World Champs. Also in this race will be Ayanleh Souleiman who holds the fastest mile time this year of 3:51.10. Not to count out World Champs silver medalist Matthew Centrowitz who has been on the top of his game this year running new personal best times in both the 800m and 1500m. It seems the competition this year will be much stronger than at the last World Champs. Our belief is that if Cronje got himself not necessarily up to the right fitness standard, but he convinced his mind to be at the right place, he can cause another upset at the World Champs.
