Willem Coertzen

8398 – 6th on the 2015 World Rankings

Willem Coertzen’s form has improved tremendously over the past 5-8 years and he has become a household name when the word ‘Decathlon’ is mentioned. Coertzen showcased early fitness when he went on to the break his third African Decathlon record on 31 May to 8398 points; and this was complimented by four personal bests he accomplished in the 1500m (4:22.22), 110mh, Shot Put and Discus Throw(44.84) events respectively. He is one of the most respected athletes in Africa and he is now elevating to greater heights. And not long after he went to improve his 110mh (14.06) and Shot Put (14.50) pb’s.

All of Coertzen’s pb’s dates back within the last 5 years with 7 being in the last 2 years. Which means that Coertzen is in the prime of his decathlon career.

His current fitness might come as a surprise to many, but after his ankle-injury withdrawal at last year’s CWG, it seems like Coertzen went back to the drawing board and came back over-prepared.

The difference between a podium and top ten position finish will be determined by how well his Pole Vault event goes. If he betters his personal best of 4.63m by 30-50cm, the chances of getting a podium spot will be much higher. The star is without a doubt ready to shine his light at the global showpiece that’s kicking off on Saturday. He is fit and he is geared up for greatness and a podium position.

Africa and South Africa is behind you all the way sir! Do yourself proud by giving your best and the rest will follow.
