Mens 110m Hurdles CoverWP Champs will be a bit more quite than usual this year as most of the athletes will be competing at the Varsity Cup in Johannesburg. But the champs still has a few highlights to look out for. Vusumzi Ziki Bolt, athletics enthusiast and Backtrack freelance writer gives us his views on this coming weekend:

Roscoe Engel will try to defend his 100m title, it will not be an easy task for Engel, he was beaten twice by Antonio Alkana this season and has a best of 10.44  this season. However Engel always manages to surprise us when the time comes. Antonio Alkana will try to win the 100m title as he ran good time earlier this year of 10.23, although it was wind assisted. Alkana will comfortably take the 110m hurdles title. Youngster Kyle Appel who has a Pb of 10.48 will also be a worthy competitor. Last year he missed out on the podium position, perhaps he will be in the run for it this year. The new kid on the block, Ethan Noble with a Pb of 10.64, who won bronze medal at the ASA junior champs last year, will be looking to cause a huge upset. Tyler Linnen who ran a wind assisted time of 10.62 will also be in the race. WP under 23 champion Yusuf Ismail will be absent due to Varsity athletics.

In the absence of Rodwell Ndlovu, Barend Koekemoer be the favorite in the 400m. He is the SA open champ and WP under 23 champion with a Pb of 45.42. Darren Stevens will fight for his money, as he ran a new Pb of 48.05 early this year. SA junior bronze medallist Jeremiah Jelewana will be hoping to better the bronze medal that he won at WPA junior champs.  Other athletes that can cause upsets include Gardeo Isaacs- 48.31, Siphosethu Boya- 48.58, Dylan Scheepers-48.68 and Astraf Peterson,

Brucye Lynn Damons, the WP junior record holder will be the man to watch in the 1500m. He broke his Pb eraly this year running 3:45.69 and he came 2nd behind Dumisani Hlaselo after sticking in there for close to 1200m in the race. Sibusiso Madikizela with a Pb of 3.46.07, a time he ran in the same race als has ran under 3:48 twice this year is another man to watch. Other athlete that will be hard to beat is Ashely Smith, the training partner of Bruce with a Pb of 3.47.68.

In the 5000m Nkosinathi Madyo will be the fastest on the track with a Pb of 13:59.01 and he is the defending champion for this event. He will face the likes of Lukhanyo Nobakada, Unathi Nteta, Duran Byman, Nkosinathi Sontyantya …. all who have ran under 14.50. The 3000m steeple chase will also be an interesting race with Madikizela and Smith having run sub 9:00 this season.

The ladies takes the biggest blow with the Varsity Athletics. But in the 1500, there is Pamela Moyikwa, Bulelwa Simae, anel Terblanche and Leanda du Bruyn. All of them have run under 4:50. Du Bruyn will most likely be the favorite in the race with a pb of 4.:7.93.Terblance has a 4:38, Moyika a 4.44.17. The 5000m will have the likes of SA Junior 10km champion for 2016 Ashleigh Simonis who has just been climbing from one height to the next in the past 2 years.
