The athletics has kicked and in the morning session we had 3 South Africans competing at the games. First up was Rynardt van Rensburg and SA Champ Jacob Rozani in the 800m heats. Both were in very fast heats on paper, with van Rensburg lining up against world record holder David Rudisha and Rozani against Makhloufi the defending 1500m champ as well as World junior record holder Nijel Amos.
Van Rensburg placed himself perfectly from the start stride for stride following Rudisha. As Rudisha started his surge for the finish line van Rensburg also pushed on and ran a seasons best time of 1:45.67 to take a 2nd place and automatic qualifier. This is his 2nd fastest time ever and just 0.27 off of his personal best. Rozani however ran a very messy race in what was one of the slowest heats as well. Coming through 56.41 first lap one expected the famous Rozani kick he showcased throughout the year. But he was to far back and just could not get to the leaders and had to settle for a 5th place with a time of 1:49.79. He did however pass Amos in the final straight who was fading badly at that point.
Dominique Scott lined up in her very first Olympic games in the 10 000m. The first long distance lady in a long time to line up for SA at such a big stage. All excited and full of energy Scott got off to a good start and fell in right behind the leaders. What was to follow by Ethiopian Ayana was one of the greatest feats in Olympic history and Scott found herself in what is probably the best 10 000m ever ran. As Ayana finished with a time of 29:17.45, a new World Record, Scott had the best seat in the house as she had to go on to chase down her own personal best. Which she then did running a 31:51.47 to take 21st place. 8 National records were broken in this race, 18 personal bests and 5 season bests.
