A group of the country’s finest long/middle distance junior men will line-up at the South African Cross Country Championships on Saturday. The group will be led by a confident Kabelo Melamu who recently returned from the World Junior Championships with a 12 th place finish and new 10000m personal best.

The field that will assemble includes world cross country representative and South African junior 3000m steeple-chase champion Ikageng Gaorekwe, Western Province’s talented Rowhaldo Ratz, the Randburg Junior Streetmile champion Ryan Mphalela, the talented WP Champion McMarshal Hartzenburg and of course Athletics Gauteng North’s Kwanele Mthembu. The guys’ 8km race will be a very tight battle! With guys like Kabelo Melamu, Kabelo Seboko and Ryan Mphalela showcasing great form in the Gauteng area or will the coastal guys Jason Koopman, Rowhaldo Ratz and McMarshal Hartzenburg step up to the plate on race day? Mpumalanga’s Sibusiso Khubeka has been showing great form this year together with Bongani Nkosi and Gauteng North’s Kwanele Mthembu and Tebogo Seholo are not afraid of taking on the ‘big guns’, so be on the look-out for these stars who is looking to take advantage of the fact that they are running in a coastal ‘dorpie’.

Six of the abovementioned athletes have represented South Africa on the international stage, so it is okay to say that a world-class field is gathered for Saturday’s South African Cross Country Championships. The rest of the field have represented their respective provinces on many occasions and have proven that they are capable of breaking all the national senior records a few years from now. Records are meant to be broken right?

So, with a world-class field of 18/19 year old stars ready to get the people of George on their feet, there is no reason why the whole country should not pitch up to support the South Africa’s future cross country legends! As this class field gather, let us also gather in support of them. See you there!
