The Duo of Tshenolo Lemao and Retshidisitswe Mlenga have done what no other South African u18 (Youth) athlete has ever done taking Gold and Silver for South Africa at the IAAF World Youth Championships in Nairobi!!

Lemao has become another of the ever growing number of amazing young sprinting champions that South Africa is producing after winning the 100 meter title at the IAAF World U18 Championships Nairobi. Lemao won the 100 meter final in cold and wet conditions in Nairobi and showed maturity past his years not allowing the conditions to dampen his ambition to be a World Youth Champion on the first major international competition on African Soil. Lemao was pushed by team mate Mlenga who was one of the favourites to win the title after cruising to a super fast 10.37 seconds in the semi-final on dry conditions for a personal best. The final was not a smooth one with the wet conditions being challenging and false starts in the race also disrupting the flow, but that didn’t disrupt the South African duo who had a date with destiny and they made SA history with gold and silver medal performances in times of 10.57 seconds for Lemao and 10.61 seconds for Mlenga.

This gold and silver 100m performances are actually the first by any South African at the u18 Championships so they have set a standard and opened the door for future South Africans to sprint through! Next up for Lemao and Mlenga will be the 200 meters which is their stronger event.

Congrats to the young men for representing South Africa in excellence at their first major international competition. The future looks bright for SA sprinting!! Thanks to all the coaches, family members and individuals who make it possible for these youngsters to perform and make SA proud.
