FROM STREET ATHLETICS TO LITTLE ATHLETICS

After introducing and successfully completing a successful Street Athletics campaign earlier in the year, Western Province Athletics’ (WPA) development team went back to the drawing board and re-introduced a refurbished WPA Little Athletics initiative.

WPA Little Athletics is an initiative which introduces children between the ages of 10 and 15 to track and field activities. Athletes can compete in the 80m, 100m, 150m, 200m, 400m or hurdles sprint events, 800m, 1200m and 1500m middle distance events, and the Long Jump, High Jump, Discus throw, Shot put and Javelin throw field events. Parents across the Cape are encouraged to fill up Vygieskraal Stadium to support, and possibly also invest, in the future stars of the sport.

Says Kurt Cameron, the WPA Development Officer, “A strong message that comes from this is to give opportunity and exposure to all kids, as not every child gets that opportunity, even at school level. So this series is also here to assist with the kids’ transition to the next stage (high school) of their careers.” And with two successful competitions already ticked off in the series of three, some talent athletes has already been identified. “It’s fair to say we have witnessed quite a number of talented athletes, especially in the hurdles, sprints and middle distance” added Cameron. But it doesn’t stop at just identifying talent. “Once the talented athletes are identified, we need to pave that pathway which will ensure that the athletes can develop holistically.”

Looking ahead, Cameron and his young team are hard at work and forever on the lookout for brilliant ideas to discover athletics talent in the Mother City and surroundings. “I think these programs play a big role in the bigger picture of athletics. Street Athletics, for example, is brilliant because we take it into the heart of the community so people are aware that athletics is well and truly alive. It gives us the opportunity to uncover the rough diamonds that is all over Cape Town.”

Join in on the fun on Saturday, 18 November at Vygieskraal Stadium, Athlone at 9am.
