ASA launches Athletix Invitational Meet powered by AVANTI

Athletics South Africa (ASA) is excited to celebrate South Africa’s return to competitive track and field racing with the launch of the exhilarating ASA Athletix Invitational Meet powered by AVANTI which will be held in Johannesburg over two legs with the first next week Tuesday 23 March 2021.

After the unforeseen one-year lull in competition due to the COVID-19 pandemic, South Africa’s finest will have the ideal opportunity to hone their skills in a competitive environment as part of their preparations for the Olympics, World Athletics Championships and the World U20 Championships.

Participation at these Meetings, however, is by invitation only and invites have been extended to athletes from other countries, especially SA’s neighbors to enter their top athletes.  The two track and field meetings will also be broadcast on SABC and livestreamed on TelkomONE (further details to be confirmed).

Intended to attract South Africa’s elite, the ASA Athletix Invitational Meet powered by AVANTI will boast two high-octane Senior meetings that are guaranteed to generate nail biting performances. This will see some of South Africa’s cream pit themselves against confirmed athletes from amongst others Czech Republic, Latvia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Finland, Egypt, Mozambique and the Kingdom of Eswatini.

In adherence to strict Covid-19 regulations, spectators will unfortunately not be permitted at the meetings which will start at 3pm in a two-hour package.

“Our athletes have missed out on a lot of competition this past year due to the pandemic,” said Aleck Skhosana, the President of ASA.  “We are excited to be able to welcome them back to competitive racing with the launch of these two premium Senior Meetings.

“Our athletes are hungry to compete and we have no doubt that the meetings will be explosive, entertaining and of the highest standard. We have also opened the meetings to fellow African countries to enable them access to high level competition and a chance to achieve their own goals, but this is all subject to compliance with South African Covid-19 rules and regulations, and fulfillment of visa requirements where relevant.

“We are very excited and proud to welcome Avanti Communications as the presenting sponsor and we welcome Avanti’s passion to help better the future for SA’s youth. We look forward to working with them to grow athletics.”

Avanti Communications CEO Kyle Whitehill added: “We are honored to sponsor Athletics South Africa for the long-awaited return of competitive athletics.  Avanti is a proud sponsor of the current Commonwealth 100m champion Akani Simbine, the fastest man in South African history.  Athletes like Akani and all those taking part in this meet have shown amazing resilience to come through a very turbulent year. We wish them all the best of luck as they restart their journey on the road to the Olympics.”
