Sprint hurdler Marione Fourie opened her season in explosive fashion on Sunday, breaking the South African 60m hurdles record in her indoor debut in Luxembourg.
Competing in the first-round heats at the CMCM indoor meeting, Fourie clocked 7.91 seconds.
She became the first SA woman to run under eight seconds in the 60m hurdles, ripping 0.19 off the national record (8.10) which was set by Antoinette van der Merwe in Boston last year.
Fourie, who also holds the national outdoors 100m hurdles record (12.49), went on to win the final at the CMCM meeting in 7.98.
With her performance in the heats, the 22-year-old athlete also achieved the automatic qualifying standard (7.94) for the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing in March.
