Middle-distance star Prudence Sekgodiso took a big step forward in her maiden indoor season, shattering her own South African short track 800m record at the Indoor Meeting Karlsruhe in Germany on Friday night.

Sekgodiso won the women’s four-lap race in 1:59.88, chopping more than two seconds off her national short track mark of 2:02.30 which she had set in her indoor debut in Belgrade nine days earlier.

The 23-year-old athlete, who reached the 800m final at last year’s Olympic Games in Paris, finished nearly a full second clear of German athlete Majtie Kolberg in Karlsruhe.

Kolberg took second place in 2:00.84, with Ethiopia’s Habitam Alemu finishing third in 2:01.34.

“The overall race was good. I tried to stay with the pace and managed to come through in the end,” Sekgodiso said.
