Multiple national records holders and Olympic medallists turned out on Thursday at the invitational track and field meeting hosted by Hoërskool Stellenbosch on Wednesday, 5 March, to open the new ACE Trust track.
Among the winners were sprint star Akani Simbine, who triumphed in the men’s 60m race in 6.57 seconds, and middle-distance specialist Prudence Sekgodiso, who took the women’s 600m race in 1:26.17, with both athletes continuing their build-up to the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing later this month.
Olympic silver medallist Jo-Ane du Plessis also showed solid early-season form, launching a best effort of 60.17m in the women’s javelin throw.
And there was a comeback for another former Olympic silver medallist, with Luvo Manyonga competing in the men’s long jump.
The 34-year-old SA record holder, lining up at a top-flight domestic meeting for the first time since 2020, took third place in his specialist discipline with a 7.31m leap, as Divan Manuel (7.53m) took the win.
