Sprint sensation Bayanda Walaza will compete at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo later this month, his management team has confirmed.

After getting off to a cracking start in the Diamond League final in Zurich last week, Walaza pulled up before the finish line, grabbing his left hamstring.

In a clearly emotional state, he left the track in a wheelchair and it was unclear if he would be available to represent the SA team at the global championships.

According to a statement released from Newton Agency, however, Walaza had been given the green light to travel with the national squad to the Japanese capital.

“After careful evaluation and consultation with relevant parties, the decision has been made that he (Walaza) will be fully fit to participate in the upcoming World Championships in Tokyo,” his agent said.

“Walaza has resumed his rehabilitation and preparations under close medical and coaching supervision. This decision reflects the commitment of his support team and his own determination to represent South Africa at the highest level, and the team remains confident in his ability to deliver strong performances on the world stage.”

This news will come as great relief to South African athletics fans.

Walaza, the 19-year-old SA junior 100m record holder and World Student Games champion, will not only fancy his chances of reaching the men’s 100m final in Tokyo, but he is also expected to play a key role for the national 4x100m relay team as they target a place on the podium.
