Combining well as a team, the boys 4x100m relay quartet representing Curro Hazeldean broke the world youth record on Friday, storming around the track in 39.92 seconds at the NWU Top 30 schools athletics meeting in Potchefstroom.

The squad – Zathu Hlongwane, Inam Dlunge, Adam Motloung and Matodzi Ndou – took 0.03 off the previous world best of 39.95 set by a team from the USA in 2015.

It was another successful performance for the sprint team from Curro Hazeldean high school in Pretoria, coached by Thabo Matebedi.

Matebedi also coaches junior sensation Bayanda Walaza, who earned a relay silver medal at the Olympic Games in Paris this year and won double gold in the 100m and 200m events at the recent World Athletics U20 Championships in Peru.

Two world records

South Africa now holds the world records in the U18 and U20 men’s 4x100m relay events after a squad consisting of Benjamin Richardson, Sinesipho Dambile, Mihlali Xhotyeni and Letlhogonolo Moleyane clocked 38.52 to win gold at the 2021 World Athletics U20 Championships in Nairobi.

The third and final day of the NWU Top 30 meeting, which includes over 3 200 athletes from 75 schools, will be held at Puk McArthur Stadium on Saturday.
